Dark Sovereign

Canadian playwright Robert Fripp is currently revising his Shakespearean-style verse play for upcoming production, with Mr. Merchant in an advisory and dramaturgical capacity. Dark Sovereign details the true story of England's Richard the Third, from his assumption of power to Bosworth Field. Further details about Robert Fripp and his play can be found here:

Tudor

While researching his production of Shakespeare's Richard the Third in Washington, D.C., Merchant was repeatedly struck by the dissonance between Shakespeare's version of events and actual historical records detailing Richard's "usurpation" of the throne in 1483. The more he dug, the more he became convinced that it was not Richard, but Henry Tudor, the victor on Bosworth field & founder of the Tudor dynasty, who was actually the more Machiavellian of the two.

This musical play is Merchant's attempt not to clear Richard's name, but to shed some light on the much-neglected Henry VII, his controversial rise to power, and his lasting effect on England itself and on the legacy of Richard the Third. In doing so, Merchant hopes to create a vivid, dramatic tableau with songs, dialogue, and characters as famous (or infamous) as Elizabeth Woodville, the Stanley brothers, John Morton, and of course, Henry Tudor himself.

Mr. Merchant is very pleased to be working in collaboration with Joseph E. Fields of the Dance Theatre of Harlem.

Leonce und Lena

In the spring of 2002 German set designer Jörg Madlener and American director Nathaniel Merchant began communicating with the intent to create an opera based on Georg Büchner's play Leonce und Lena. Though the project is as yet uncompleted, included herein are designer's biography and scenic designs. It is the artists' hope that this project will in time be produced, either as a theatrical version or, as initially planned, as a full opera.
